Saving Gas When You Drive

Ever since the gas crisis took place in the United States a few years ago

, people have been scrambling to do whatever they can to save money when it comes to filling up their cars. As you may or may not remember, it wasn't that long ago that the gas prices soared well beyond $4 per gallon, causing some people to spend upwards of $70 just to fill up their gas tank.

However, if you still own a sport utility vehicle that you either cannot seem to get rid of or don't really have a choice except to keep it, there are little things that you can do to help you save money in the gasoline department. For instance, one of the first things that you can do is slow down. Many of us are often in a rush to go places. Whether it's to work or to a friend's house or to go food shopping, we are speeding because we have an agenda and places to be. By reducing your speed, you can conserve almost a half a tank of gas in just one week!

Admittedly, I used to drive well above the speed limit, and for no particular reason other than that I simply liked to speed. However, once the gas prices hit, they hit me extremely hard in my pocket. I was easily spending more than $100 a week just to fill up my Jeep- sometimes more depending on where I was driving and how often I had to fill up my gas tank. It eventually got to a point where I had to do something, and getting rid of my car at that point was not an option. So, I reduced my speed and condensed my trips. By condensing my trips, I am simply referring to the fact that if I knew that I had an errand to run, I would group all of my errands together so that all of my shopping took place at stores that were within walking distance. Alternatively, I aimed to get all of my shopping done at one store so that I wouldn't have to drive all over town.

Another way to conserve gasoline is to do the majority of your driving during times of the day when traffic is light. For instance, if you are trying to save gasoline, you may want to run most of your errands after rush hour is over. Whatever you do, try to come up with ways to save gasoline on your own so that you don't have to worry about the price at the pump quite as much.
