Reducing Energy Spend Using Accurate SBEM Calculations

Energy consumption and CO2 emissions have become an increasingly important consideration in the construction and ownership of homes and commercial buildings. As the government continues to dedicate itself to reducing the countrys CO2 footprint, and there is a greater awareness from individuals and businesses regarding their carbon footprint, the demand for greater energy efficiency has also increased.

Energy Assessments

A commercial energy assessment can be undertaken by a qualified assessor using the BRE developed iSBEM software application. This gives accurate calculation of a propertys energy consumption and can also be used to assess a buildings CO2 emission rate. Using these SBEM calculations it is possible for a qualified assessor or energy conservation consultancy to minimise energy consumption and therefore reduce the CO2 emissions of that building.

Energy Consumption And Wastage

Buildings use energy for a variety of purposes. Heating, electrical equipment, and air conditioning are among some of the biggest uses of energy in a building and even the most modern of equipment has some energy loss. In the case of heating, poorly insulated properties can lose a large portion of their energy through doors, windows, and roof spaces. By using accurate SBEM calculations it is possible to calculate how much CO2 is being lost in this way and to identify areas for possible improvement.

Part L Building Regulations

SBEM Calculations are also used to show compliance with part L building regulations that govern the energy efficiency of new buildings. These regulations govern the replacement of windows and the upgrading of boilers in existing buildings as well as the construction of new buildings.
