Scavenger Hunt Theme: Learning Black History Month

Trying to steer away from the usual lecturing

, having a scavenger hunt can help students be more interested in history and other subjects. They learn how to look for different things and learn them in the process. A perfect example is in Black History Month.

A scavenger hunt begins with recognizing the science contributions of African-American people. If the scavenger hunt is going to be held in school, transforming laboratories to small places with exhibits and make people find out different things that pertains to science. Give them examples like the first African-American to obtain a Biological Science Doctor of Philosophy, PhD; Oscar Coffin. Ask them to take photos and samples of works that can be traced back to African-American people.

After science, people can now create a scavenger hunt theme to let people learn more about the leaders of the African-American movement. Almost everyone knows the oppression that the African-American people have gone through in order to get to the status theyre at today. What people do not know are the different people who have spearheaded the movements. Organizations like Black Panther and people like Malcolm Little should be given more insight for people and a scavenger hunt is a great way to do it.

On a lighter note, people can also do research on African-American people who have been in stamps. This way, instead of them trying to find the person, they should try and find what the person did to get honored with his own stamp. People like Booker T. Washington should be displayed, and the people should find a way to know what his contributions were to society to get that honor.

The scavenger hunt can also be about asking question regarding Black History Month. People know what its for, but might not know who and how the celebration started. Some random facts like the original name of Black History Month, Negro History Week, should be noted. The original month, February, should also be part of the things that people should be able to research about.

Finally, a scavenger hunt cannot be complete without some geographic themes. Try and let the students know the origin of African-American people; trace their roots and their heritage. Find out the different things that they did before globalization and industrialization took place. Have them research about the languages, the clothing and the culture so that they will get a familiarization on what the history was.
