Scenic Walks And Hikes When Out On Grand Canyon Tours

The Natural Beauty of the Grand Canyon

The Natural Beauty of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years by erosion caused by the Colorado River. It is one of the largest, if not the largest, natural wonders of the world. Of course, when people think of the Grand Canyon most would probably envision an incredibly deep chasm of barren rock and they would be correct, for the most part. However the Canyon is also home to an incredibly diverse range of animal and plant life. Because of the Canyon's varied elevation levels habitats change from desert up to mountain forests along the rims, allowing many species of bird, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plants to make their home there.

Hiking the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and over a mile deep. So it is hardly surprising that it boasts such a variety of life and has different trails that can be hiked to explore it. For those who like adventure holidays this is one of the best, as the trails vary in difficulty so there is something for the experienced hiker or those who prefer something more easy-going. The South Rim trail is a relaxing, meandering walk, giving plenty of time to enjoy the incredible scenery. For more of a challenge, there is the trail to Plateau Point.

There are also other hiking trails of various lengths such as the Roosevelt Point Trail, a short loop through secluded woodland with amazing views. It is only 0.2 miles and takes approximately 20 minutes. Or there is the North Kaibab Trail. This is the only maintained trail into the canyon from the North Rim and has hikes of different lengths including a round trip hike to Roaring Springs. This hike is not for the inexperienced as it takes a full day to get there and return as well as being incredibly difficult.

For those who may be uncertain about hiking the Canyon by themselves there are guided hiking tours available. Or, for those with more confidence, there are self guiding trail brochures for any who want to find their own way. There are more challenging and steep hikes on the North Rim than on the South Rim. These should only be attempted by experienced hikers with the proper footwear, clothes and equipment. Any hikers however should make sure they have plenty of water with them.

Grand Canyon Tours

There are many tours that go to the Grand Canyon as it is a popular tourist sight. It is possible to stay in glittering Las Vegas and take a day tour to the Canyon or to stay longer and really see it properly. It is also possible to take in other areas such as the Grand Canyon National Park or the nearby Native American Reservation. For those who like a challenge on their adventure holidays however hiking the Canyon is hard to beat.

The Grand Canyon certainly lives up to its title. And there is hardly a better way to be awed and feel dwarfed by its impressive scale than to go right down into the heart of it.
