School Safety
Many high school seniors are graduating this spring and preparing to move away to college in the fall
. Some of those recent grads might be planning to move across town, while others might be moving across the country.
Even sending kids off to elementary, middle or high school can be nerve wracking for parents these days. No matter where you live or what grade the kids are in, questions are always in parents heads: Will my kids be safe? What happens if they get lost? Will a stranger approach them? Did we teach them to do the right thing?
In some areas, community activists and local nonprofit foundations have helped staff and fund safety initiatives in and around schools. Even the U.S. Department of Justice has gotten involved.
According to a recent Detroit Free Press story, The U.S. Department of Justice also is helping. The department took on the issue of youth violence after a Chicago honor student was beaten to death by other teens in 2009 and the video of the murder went viral on the Internet. Detroit is one of six cities taking part in the department's National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention. The department works with cities to develop strategies for dealing with youth violence, though the city has to find its own funding through local partnerships.

The reason behind the development of smartphone safety apps, such as Gabe The Guardian app, was to help people stay safe, in any dangerous or potentially dangerous situation. They allow users to alert their closest contacts of their location if they are in an emergency, all with the touch of a button.
These mobile devices are in nearly everyones pocket, said Michael Monahan, founder of Gabe The Guardian app. With that penetration in the marketplace, along with the tools that are inherent in the phones, like email, texting and GPS positioning, we should be able to use them to alert friends and family of dangerous situations.
Gabe The Guardian app has taken promoting safety to a new level as it is working to partner with nonprofit organizations. By working with nonprofits, Gabe The Guardian is put into the hands of more people, and a percentage of revenues raised are sent back to the nonprofit as well.
To us, it just made sense to help promote safety and support organizations that are working to make our communities better places, all at the same time, Monahan said. Our goal is the same as everyone elses we want our communities to be safe places to live, work and play.
Gabe The Guardian is not only a way to put safety in the palm of peoples hands, but it is also the way to help communities grow stronger. Gabe The Guardian is the safety app for your smartphone and for your community.
