Sclerotherapy For Treating Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is spider veins treatment that involves injection of salt solution to the vein

. This irritates the blood vessel lining to make it swell and stick together. This leads to blood clotting after which the vessel becomes scar tissue and fades from view.

Your doctor will first decide if you are eligible for sclerotherapy as pregnant women are not eligible for it, but those on birth control pills are. The eligibility of people who have had blood clots in the past is decided on an individual basis based on the persons overall health and the reason for the blood clot. Even veins that may be used for future bypass surgery is not considered for sclerotherapy.

The process

A very fine needle is used to inject salt solution to the vein where you may feel some mild discomfort and cramping for a few minutes. This process takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Based on the size and location of veins and the patients medical condition, the number of veins to be injected in a session is decided.

Sclerotherapy is carried out in a doctors office by a surgeon or dermatologist. However after the procedure, you should not do any aerobic activity for a few days.

Preparation

Before sclerotherapy, you have to talk to your doctor about any over the counter drugs, herbs and dietary supplements you take. Some medications like aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers will have to be avoided for about 2-3 days before the procedure.

If you need to take an antibiotic, you will have to contact your doctor about it. No lotions should however be applied on the legs before sclerotherapy.

After sclerotherapy

You will be able to drive yourself home after sclerotherapy, and even resume your daily activities. Your doctor will encourage walking and advise you to wear support hosiery to compress the treated vessels. If you have been using compression hosiery prior to the treatment, you will have to show it to your surgeon to ascertain that it still offers sufficient compression and support after sclerotherapy.

After sclerotherapy, you will still have to avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen and anti-inflammatory drugs for about two days. You should also avoid taking hot baths and compresses, whirlpools, saunas and direct sunlight exposure for two days after the treatment. Taking a shower is permitted, but with cooler water than usual. Use mild soap and tepid water to wash injection sites.
