Scope of Bamboo Industry in Assam
It is estimated that there is about 50000crore market on various bamboo based items around the world
. Indian Bamboo resources are reportedly the second largest in the world. Northeastern states are the highest producer of bamboo resource. But the North east India has been facing a lot of problems in the field of manufacturing, technology, marketing and many other areas.
Bamboo has been used through history not only because of the strength of the material, but also through the renewable prospects. Bamboo is also easy to grow, because of the root systems. Running bamboo species are especially easy to grow, as they produce several shoots at a time, and will take over as much room as they possibly can. Bamboo and Rattan represent untapped major resource of Assam State whose full ecological and economic potential needs to be recognized, developed and promoted in a manner ensuring ecological security for all round sustainable development of the State and also the livelihood security to its people. Indian bamboo has more processibility due to its longitudinal structure of fibers unlike Chinese bamboo with cross-sectional structure. China can lend their products at cheap price and in huge quantity in the market because of their technological advantage.
As per a recent study, the bamboo has over 1500 documented uses, in India. It is primarily meant for making paper pulp (35%), apart from uses like housing (20%), non-residential uses (5%) , rural uses (20%), fuel (8.5%), packing, including baskets (5%), transport (1.5%), furniture (1%), other wood industries(1%), other (3%) . The main bamboo growing areas of Assam are the districts of Cachar, KarbiAnglong, North Cachar Hills, Nagaon and Lakhimpur, Sonitpur etc. Some of the widely used Bamboo products in this region are Chalani (sieve), Kula(winnowing fan), Khorahi (small basket),Dukula/Tukuri (big basket), Dala (bamboo tray), Duli (Assamese)Big basket for storing paddy/ rice, Doon (Assamese)for measuring paddy/rice (usually one doon contains 5 seers),Dhol (big measure) ,Bamboo mats known as Dhari, Dhara, Jharia or Darma.
There is a enormous scope of Bamboo based industries in Assam. Many bamboo based industries from this region are making their presence in international market, e.g. Rhino bamboo industry from Guwahati constantly exports goods to several countries like USA, Brazil, Australia, Europe, etc. Government of Assam is in a rapid rate of promoting Bamboo based Industries. Government has initiated a project plan for Bamboo cultivation and production recently. Policies are also looking like in favor of the entrepreneurs. Organizations like National bamboo Mission, CBTC, NEDFi, Building materials and technology promotion council are also providing support for the new venture. Now options are widely open for the dynamic Entrepreneurs.
