Scuba Diving Wet Suit Selection Tips

There are a number of different suits that may be categorized within the so called

scuba wet suit category, although their actual structures and components are significantly different. People utilize the different diving suits, dependant on conditions within which they dive, and the most common scuba diving wet suit types include the dry suit, the semi dry suit and the wet suit.

Often times the dry suit is utilized in extremely cold water conditions, and is normally more suited to the commercial diving fraternity. Most people will elect for either a full or shorty scuba diving wet suit, with the main difference being that the latter mentioned suit does not have the arms and legs covered. The shorty scuba diving wet suit is quite often referred to as a spring suit too, and is mostly suited to a warmer water region, usually within the tropics.

For more comprehensive protection from the elements, the full suit is recommended and this type of suit is commonly referred to as a steamer scuba diving suit. One could also invest in the so called detachable type suit, which offers the ability of removing the arms and legs of the scuba diving wet suit and is often referred to as a convertible suit. The true benefit of the detachable suit is contained in the fact that the diver can literally dive in many different places and is not restricted by his or her wet suit's functionality in terms of the protection that it offers.

One of the key design features is contained in the thickness of the suit itself, which is a measure of the neoprene material that forms the centre of the functionality of the wet suit. The thickness of the neoprene is normally concentrated around the mid-body area or torso, as this is where the body needs the most protection, for the vital organs. Thicknesses of suits vary, and the conditions will once again determine your needs in terms of a scuba diving wet suit. It is also true that a completely customized suit can be obtained with varying thicknesses in various parts of the suit itself.

One of the most important factors is that the suit fits correctly and snugly without being too tight and restrictive. One must ensure that an amount flexibility and comfort is ensured with the correct size and fitting of the suit in question. Although the suit should not rub against the skin, this may occur from time to time, especially if one is moving around fairly rigorously within the suit. Areas that are specific to the comfort levels include arms and legs, as these are the most used when underwater.

A well fitted suit will also prevent water from flowing through the suit, as this will defeat the object of the scuba diving wet suit. The suit should also not restrict blood flow, as this will have a dramatic effect upon the time that you can spend underwater. Technology has advanced significantly enough to allow for fewer joins and seams in the suit, which allows for less exposure to the colder water. With fewer seams, the likelihood of the suit splitting is substantially reduced.
