Sean Penn Teams With Cannes Film Fest For Haiti: Carnival In Cannes

, and now gaining attention for his relief work in Haiti. The actor is working with the Cannes Film Festival to bring a major fundraising effort to the festival this year. The Cannes International Film Festival has taken the unusual step of sponsoring the largest party of the festival for this organization. The event will be known as Haiti: Carnival in Cannes. Its set to be a star-studded event benefiting several organizations.

Penn is known for movies such as Dogtown and Z-Boys, Mystic River, 21 Grams, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Colors, Dead Man Walking and Milk. He has also been well-loved as a screenwriter and director for such movies as The Indian Runner. Penn has long been a political activist. We can now add hero to the list of adjectives used to describe this complicated man.

Following the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, Sean Penn began his relief work in Haiti. The work known as J/P HRO has already earned Penn the 2012 Peace Summit Award. This organization has been responsible for treating 8,000 patients with medical concerns each month. They have removed 200,000 metric tons of rubble and delivered 100 metric tons of cholera supplies. They have assisted 400 children in getting a quality education. Of course, all this comes with an enormous price tag.

The Cannes Film Festival event - Haiti: Carnival in Cannes - is set to help many. Also benefiting from the event will be Paul Haggiss Artists for Peace and Justice. This organization is responsible for building the first free public school in Port-au-Prince. It also is responsible for forming the first Little League baseball team in Haiti. The organization is supported by Ben Stiller, Jane Fonda, LeAnn Rimes and Sharon Osbourne. Both organizations had separate gala affairs at the Cannes International Film Festival last year on the same night. Now, they have joined forces.

Haiti: Carnival in Cannes will also benefit Petra Nemcovas Happy Hearts organization. Happy Hearts has been responsible for rebuilding 57 schools that have enriched the lives of 34,412 children around the world including in Haiti.

The evening will feature a concert of rara music which features cylindrical bamboo trumpets, used during Easter street processions in Haiti. The songs pay tribute to the African ancestry of the Haiti people. Today, the music is often used in political campaigns with candidates having songs written just for them. The concert will also feature racine music. Racine music, sometimes referred to as voodoo music, has a rock and roll sound. The music will be performed by the RAM band from Haiti led by male vocalist Richard A. Morse. The band has played for many years at the famous Hotel Oloffson.
