One other fantastic film starring Penn was Dead Man Walking. This movie is about a nun who empathizes with both a convicted death row killer and the family of his victim. A great movie to watch on a cold weekend or stay at home vacation.
One movie that must be mentioned in this list is I Am Sam. If you are looking for a serious tear jerker with incredible acting, then I Am Sam is a great option. Sean Penn was incredible in this movie.
Finally, one other movie that nabbed Penn an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role was 1999's Sweet And Lowdown. This is a great music film.
