Sebum Is Made The Sebaceous Glands

The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that normally empties onto

the skin surface through the opening of the follicle, commonly called a pore. Cells called keratinocytes line the follicle. The sebaceous glands which lie just under the surface of your skin produce sebum, the skins natural moisturizer. These glands and the hair follicles where they are found are called sebaceous follicles. This trapped sweat, mixed with the oil secreted by the sebaceous glands, causes the skin pores on the back to clog and the result is acne.

During these hormonal imbalances sebaceous glands release more sebum than usual. This excess of sebum combines with sweat, skin cells and dirt causing a good breeding environment for bacteria to form. Accutane kills oil glands under the skin, thereby removing the much needed producer of oil. Pores contain sebaceous (say: suh- bay -shus) glands (also called oil glands) that make sebum (say: see -bum), an oil that moistens your hair and skin.

Your back has several sebaceous glands that generate oils, which is also the reason why your back area is prone to acne. It is primarily a disorder of the sebaceous gland (glands in the skin that secrete an oily substance) of the face, the neck and back. When the sebaceous glands become clogged with the oily substance they create, the accumulation results in pimples. Certain studies found out that back acne, just like the other forms of acne, also appear when the sebaceous glands start working more aggressively around puberty. It is interesting to know that the sebaceous glands are actually situated just below the shell of the skin, and it persistently produce and emit oil through the pores.

As far as the medical community stands, back acne also happens when oil glands start functioning more rapidly around puberty. The hormone group androgens, found in both females and males, get overactive which in turn causes a reaction in the oil glands, which make extra oil. It markedly reduces the size of the oil glands so that much less oil is produced. As a result, the growth of bacteria is decreased. When oil-producing sebaceous glands become over active, extra sebum or oil is produced. This excess oil then gets mixed with dead skin cells to block the skin pores and draw bacteria.

Cyst is a type of acne that occurs when the sebaceous glands produce more oil (sebum) than the body requires. This excess oil accumulates around the pores, lying just beneath the skin, clogging them over a period of time. Once again it's due to the overproduction of sebum (oils) by the sebaceous glands that then clog up pores and cause acne on face, neck, back, hairline or wherever. These is because, thanks to the larger glands found on the back, more oil is produced on the back than it is on the face. The skin on the back is also much thicker than that which occurs on the face.

Now of course there are factors that "cause" hyperactivity of our glands, clogged pores, bacterial infection and the like. Stress is the hands-down number one cause of sebaceous glands hyperactivity that may turn out into acne inflammation. This is mainly because the skin on the back takes up a vast area and it has a lot of sebaceous glands that produce much more oil than the skin on the face. Apart from that fact, the skin on your back is much harder to get access to, thereby vastly increasing the difficulty of getting rid of back acne. It is interesting to know that the sebaceous glands are actually situated just below the shell of the skin, and it persistently produce and emit oil through the pores.
