You need to demonstrate that you are a leader that people like to be around and that they can trust because the people will join your network most of the time because of YOU and not the business itself.
Another important thing to remember is that when you market to people you need to sell them a solution to their needs and wants and not just the business itself. For example people do not buy a drill because they want a drill, they buy it because they want a hole. Just like most of the time people don't want to know the details of a home based business opportunity first. What they want is a way to help make residual income in their lives and a way to help pay off some of their bills or a way to finance their goals or have the extra money to the vacation of their dreams for example.
This is why you have to market a solution for peoples' needs and wants first before the info about the business because if you market the aspects of you business first nobody will be interested because that is not what they wanted in the first place. They wanted the hole and not the drill for example.
A good way of finding out what people actually want is to give them surveys so you know what it is they want in their lives and how your business can cater to their needs and find a way for them to get what they want through your MLM business.
Develop a solution for people and set a good example and they will follow your inspiration!
