The real key to a great Lat spread is chin ups and pull ups and lots of them
One of the awesome thing about chin ups is that its also one of the best exercise to build big arms - I mean where else do you get the opportunity to curl your body weight? Not often.
Most hard gainers can't even do one chin up (palms facing you, as opposed to pull ups - palms facing away from you) but you really need to master them to get any real size and spread on your upper back.
Its best to start with chin up and once you can do 10 at a time try your hand at pull-ups as most people find those harder to start with.
Chin ups
Week 1: To start try 8 sets of 1 rep twice a week (once early in the week one later)
Week 2: 4 sets of 2 reps twice a week (once early in the week one later)
Week 3: 4 sets of 4 chin ups twice a week (once early in the week one later)
Week 4: 3 sets of 5 chin ups twice a week (once early in the week one later)
Week 5: off - let your body rest
Week 6 : start working on pull ups - try starting on 4 sets of 2 reps - if you cannot do that work on doing negatives.
Negatives are one of the quickest ways to build your upper body strength. What you do is focus on LOWERING your self and then have a buddy (or the floor below, or a box to stand on) and RAISE yourself back up using your feet/legs - after 2 - 3weeks of working on negatives you will definitely be able to do more pull ups
