Security guard raised alarm during burglary

Guards with security training and CCTV training are vital when it comes to protecting many businesses across the UK and elsewhere. One individual performing such a role who raised an alarm during a burglary last year was Raymond Dawson.

A trial has been taking place concerning the incident, which occurred in August 2010, the Kingston Guardian reports.

Three men have been accused of aggravated burglary and have denied the charges. The individuals are James Smith, Robert O'Connor and Rocky Goldsmith. However, Mr Smith and Mr Connor did admit to burglary.

During the raid, a group arrived on motorbikes and targeted the Fraser Hart jewellers in the Bentall Centre shortly after midnight. In total, six men wearing crash helmets arrived at the store. One prised the door of the centre open using a crowbar, while three others ran inside and smashed the jeweller's window using a sledgehammer.

Seeing the disturbance, Mr Dawson raised the alarm. Commenting on the incident, he remarked: "I turned around and ran to the Clarence Street doors. I was frightened I was going to get hit by the sledgehammer."

Police chased two motorbikes, one of which crashed. The other drove into a dead end but managed to escape. The passenger threw items at the pursuing officer's face, causing him to suffer cuts to his forearm. Watches were later found on the road.

The trial remains ongoing.
