Sedation Dentistry- A Key To Anxiety-free Dental Visits
Are you afraid of going to the dentist? A surprising large percentage of the population
is either nervous when they go to the dentist or so scared that they purposely avoid going in to see the dentist for years at a time. Avoiding seeing your dentist can lead to serious problems including tooth decay, gum disease and more serious issues that can be very costly to fix. Luckily, dentists around the country have been trained to assist you if you are feeling anxious. One common way that dentists do this is by the practice of sedation dentistry. By administering sedative drugs to you, your dentist will be able to fully relax you while not fully knocking you unconscious. By using sedation dentistry, your dentist will remove all of your anxiety in a totally safe and effective procedure. If you are anxious about going to the dentist, talk to your dentist about sedation dentistry.
IV Sedation
One common way that sedation drugs are administered is through an IV. This is generally attached to either your inner elbow or the top of your wrist through a needle. Once the sedation drug has started to take effect, you will feel completely relaxed and your anxiety about the dental procedure will melt away. Although you are totally relaxed, most sedative drugs will not make you fully unconscious. Because of this, you will be able to respond to commands from your dentist. Because you are totally relaxed, your dentist will be able to take as long as he or she needs to perform the dental procedures. Many times, patients will get a large amount of work done in one appointment while sedated. Since you will not be able to drive a car after your appointment, you will need to bring a companion with you to take you home after the procedure. After resting comfortably the rest of the day, you will wake up the next day fully recovered from the sedation medication.
Oral Sedation
Another popular method of sedation among dentists is oral sedation. This method includes taking a sedative pill through the mouth. If you are afraid of needles, this is probably the option for you. Generally you dentist will prescribe you a pill that you will take before the procedure begins. After you are feeling completely relaxed, your dentist will be free to perform the dental work on you. Although you will be conscious the entire time, afterwards it is not uncommon for you to not remember what happened during the procedure.
By having pleasant experiences at the dentist through the process of sedation dentistry, your anxiety about going to the dentist will dissipate over time. To learn more about sedation dentistry or to set up an appointment, contact your Riverview dentist today.
