This can be a touchy topic. Self-gratification shouldnt always be seen as bad. Young people need to do things to satisfy themselves but also realize that they need to think of others. Parents need to realize to look out for the desires of their children. They shouldnt push them into following dreams they deem fit for them while ignoring the childs interests. Children should try to please their friends by sharing and being kind. Teachers should seek the best learning environment for their students by being cheerful and committed even on the hardest days. Ultimately, everyone on the planet needs to be aware of the others around him.

Empathy can be a hard concept for young children to understand, but it is one that they should be encouraged to grow in. When a child can look outside of himself and see another and take the others needs to heart and do something about them if possible, that child opens himself up to an entirely new level of joy and contentment. Focus must be put on helping others in this time of worldwide hurt and loss. Remembering others feelings and showing care could be the Band-Aid that restores hope to those desperate for it. Restoring joy to others rejuvenates self.

Great projects for children can include working in a soup kitchen or making crafts for the elderly in nursing homes. Children can be active in collecting donations of money or canned goods for organizations that help the needy. Children can offer to shovel snow out of a neighbors driveway for free. They can offer to take care of the yard while a neighbor is sick or they can help in preparing food for families whove recently lost a loved one. Ideas abound, and with little thought, parents and teachers can help their children become active in caring for others. As a result, the level of contentment and joy in the participants will increase exponentially.
