Seeking to Climb the Coporate Ladder, People Turn to Plastic Surgery

History is full of success stories of individuals who weren't much to look at: Think Albert Einstein or Napoleon. But these are exceptions and don't disprove the rule that appearance makes a difference in chances for success in the workplace.

More and more research shows that says looks matter in the workplace. Beautiful people have more opportunities for advancement and tend to make more money. For this reason, plastic surgery is more frequently being use used as tool for career advancement by both men and women looking to get ahead. Increasingly, business people are investing money in improving their looks, believing this is one way they can move up the corporate ladder.

And, they're probably right. Good-looking college graduates are more likely to get hired. Attractive supervisors are perceived as more persuasive and credible. Employees are more willing to work harder for better-looking bosses. For these reasons, plastic surgery is a good investment for the workplace since investments that make you appear younger and improve your physical appearance can delay the decline of your workplace effectiveness as you age.

People are taking notice. Several years ago, The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported that about 2/3 of its members' patients requested cosmetic surgery wanted it to remain competitive in the workplace.

As a "career investment", a more youthful appearance can be costly. Hair transplants, for example, cost around $15,000 to $35,000. Despite some very high priced procedures, certain cosmetic procedures can offer good value. Eyelid surgery, for example, can produce vast improvements in erasing the signs of aging and are a fraction of the cost of a complete facelift.

Some may say that society puts too much emphasis on physical attractiveness. The widespread bias in favor of good looking people can ultimately become discriminatory, especially when related to age. While this seems grossly unfair, there most likely will not be a change in our preference for physically attractive people in the near future. Rather, it's more likely that social norms, attitudes and technological advances will continue to make cosmetic surgery increasingly common.

Since experts predict that in the future, plastic surgery will increasingly become a tool in career advancement just like education and clothes are, plastic surgery will become routinely used as a tool for career-minded go-getters.
