Given below are the personality traits of some of the most popular dog breeds across the globe:

Labrador retriever: This breed is probably the most popular choice for pet owners across the world, mainly because of their friendly nature, easy temperament and boundless energy. Labrador retrievers will make great pets if you have a family, as they are great with children. They are also known as "therapy dogs", as they are great for company, especially for the elderly, lonely and disabled people.

American pit bull terrier: These dogs usually appear strong and powerful, mainly because of their strong muscular jaws and brick like head. They are loyal, affectionate and good-natured. They have been known to be a little aggressive towards other dogs, but this can be handled, with proper training.

Golden retriever: Dogs that belong to this breed are strong and well-muscled, having a heavily feathered tail and a dense coat. These sporting dogs are highly trainable, alert, eager to please, obedient, and confident. They are gentle and loving by nature, which is why they are great with children and especially those children, with learning disabilities or special needs. Their life expectancy is about 10 to 13 years.


Yorkshire terriers: These dogs are known to be alert, spirited and intelligent. They require a lot of patience and proper training to reduce their tendency towards nipping or timidity. These dogs are probably the smallest in size. They are always ready for an adventure and are ever willing to please.

Boxer: Boxers are considered as family pets, because they are good with children, gentle, patient, attentive, energetic and very devoted. While they may behave well with the other house pets, they are cautious with the strange ones, making them good potential guard dogs. However, they require physical exertion and are not very suitable for people who prefer to lead a sedentary lifestyle.

German shepherd: Dogs that belong to this breed probably have the keenest sense of smell in the canine world. They are agile, strong, protective and loyal, which makes them ideal as working dogs, best suited to protection and police work. However, they do get attached to their families and suffer from anxiety, upon separation. They need daily exercise and frequent mental challenges to thrive.
