Selecting And Planting Trees

Before planting new trees, determine both your needs and the existing conditions of your site

. Remember that many trees grow quickly and continue to grow for many years. Once a tree is planted and begins to establish itself, it won't be easy to transplant so be sure to work from a garden plan.

Familiarize yourself with the existing conditions of your garden and the specific light and soil requirements of your new trees before planting. Many trees require lots of sunlight to while others grow well in shade. Nutrient rich soil is also important to the health of your trees.

First, select a tree that will work with your existing garden. Large shade trees are usually not suitable for smaller spaces as they will eventually tower over a the garden and create a shady environment. Planted in an open field, however, large trees may work very well. Trees such as the cherry, dogwood or magnolia are more suitable for the small garden.

Do some research to find out the mature height and width of your selected tree. Plant at a safe distance from your home or walkways to avoid any problems. A tree planted along a front walk can be beautiful at fist but over time may grow too large for its spot. A large tree in a small space may need to be pruned often, resulting in an unnatural shapes.

Trees are an ideal way to mark boundary lines, crate a windbreak or to create a privacy screens. In the summer, trees create shade providing a break from the hot afternoon sun.

Always be sure to select healthy looking tree with a burlap covered root ball. Carefully check the tree's trunk and be sure to choose one without damaged bark. Also, check the trees branches for broken limbs.

To plant your tree, dig a hole the twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Place the tree in the hole making sure that the top of the root ball is level with the existing grade of the garden. Avoid planting trees too deep or too high as this can result in the early decline of the tree. Backfill around the root ball with a mix of compost and existing soil. Once the hole is about halfway filled, water and let settle to eliminate air pockets. Finish backfilling the hole, create a saucer around the trunk and water again.

Planning is an important part of any successful garden so be sure to become familiar with your tree's requirements and your own garden's natural environmental conditions. With some initial planning, properly located and planted trees can last a lifetime with very little maintenance.
