Servers: The Technological Form of Gold?

As IT departments grow and change, servers undoubtedly come and ago. Old servers are removed from service because they no longer meet the need of the company; new servers are put in place to help handle growing workloads. In the past, due to rapid technology changes in the x 86 environments, many servers saw their value plummet the minute they were plugged in. In fact, from the time your order was placed and delivered, technology had already changed in some fashion. It was hard to keep up, and residual value of servers and other IT equipment was pretty low.

Today, the dynamics have changed somewhat, and IT managers are finding that secondary markets exist for IT equipment they no longer need. Technology is no longer growing at the lightning fast pace it was a few years ago, and as a result, many servers can meet business needs well beyond the typical three to four years that was common in the past.

What this means to businesses is two things: 1) The replacement cycle has been lengthened, today businesses are seeing equipment have longer usefulness on the shop floor. As a result, IT budgets can take a small breather from the breakneck pace of constant replacement. 2) The equipment that businesses no longer need can often be sold to secondary markets or to IT equipment resellers that can find a new use for them. This disposal process not only helps the business manage their IT infrastructure physical hardware lifecycle, but it also can provide a small, but sometimes notable, bump in residual income.

What becomes of these old servers? They are often refurbished, checked over and sold to other customers who are looking for computing resources, but don't often need the latest and greatest. The refurbished IT equipment market is a booming business and many organizations find that they can often save substantial amount of money, and get adequate performance, by buying refurbished equipment instead of new.

Think of a local library, or a non-profit group for a moment. They do not need the latest and greatest Xeon processor and dual-fibre channel disk connections. They just need to be able to run some basic accounting software. Through the refurbished marketplace, they are able to obtain affordable equipment that is more than enough for them. What may surprise you, is that often times this equipment comes will a warranty, and is every bit as good as the brand new machines that might be sitting in your shop right now.

Of course, another aspect of refurbishing old IT gear for reuse is the environmental aspect. Electronic equipment contains many heavy metals and other components that can clog landfills and potentially be hazardous to the environment if not disposed of properly. By keeping equipment in use for longer amounts of time, we are helping to reduce the environmental impact.

So you see, servers truly are the technological form of gold! For some of us, the gold lies in the disposal of servers to buyers who will refurbish them for other organizations. For others, it is when they find out they can buy a refurbished system for a fraction of the price of something new. A win-win situation, and an environmentally sound one too!
