Setting Realistic Goals For Your Sites
This is a topic near and dear to my heart, if only because without goals I would never get anything done. So, I want to talk to you a bit today about just how important those goals are and how much of a difference they make when I wake up in the morning (so take notes!). In particular, I want to talk about how important it is to have goals for each website - ones that you can measure and analyse and poke with a stick when they start to look a little lethargic. Because, honestly, if you didn't do all that, how would you know your site is really succeeding on the level you want it to?
Examples of Good Goals
The thing that too many site owners (myself included) do is to go half way with their goals. Sure, they login to Google Analytics once a week and check their numbers and see that they have in fact made gains in traffic. But, how do you know if those traffic gains are enough? How do you know if you'll ever get to the point that a single website can support you - or a cadre of websites can support you? You'll never know if you don't set static, easily measurable goals. Here's what I specifically have in mind:

In short, we like pretty, whole numbers to get bigger each month in multiple categories. But, if you don't measure all of these things and hopefully setup goal measuring tools in your Analytics, you'll never know if you're actually succeeding where you want to succeed. After all, the formula for success involves traffic, conversion, and income. If you are missing any one of those three things, what good do the other two provide?
Setting and Meeting Goals
So, this article probably wouldn't be much use if I didn't actually share some goal setting tips with you. To start with, break down your goals into different chunks. And unlike a lot of people, I always start big and work backward. Set big, ridiculous goals for the next year or two. But, make sure they are specific, with numbers you can measure.
Now, with those goals set, you can start breaking it down into manageable chunks from month to month and then week to week. Once you get to the weekly goal state, I recommend you start attaching specific tasks that can help achieve those goals. For example, if you had a new site launching next week and your goal was to have 200 unique hits per day within 6 months, you might start with a goal to have 50 unique hits per day after one month. You would then create a task list that helps you reach that goal with things like:
