Setting Up Art Studios
The popularity of garden studios is increasing, due to their suitability as art studios bright, spaceous, detached and airy. When setting up your art studio, in your garden, here are my top 5 tips.
Place. Getting out of the house is advantageous, away from domestic distractions, noise and daily clutter. Just where to place it in your garden depends very much on your site. Northern light is most sought after for its ambience and lack of glare do you have a northerly aspect you can employ?
Seclusion. Whether you need room for life studies or just to arrange your inspiration around you, there comes a sense of freedom from being able to do that creative development away from prying eyes. Is your site overlooked by other windows? If so, can you orientate your room for maximum privacy without compromising light?
Comfort. No longer is the myth of the starving artist in the garret, with one lump of coal and ice on the insides of the windows! Finding really good quality, well insulated garden studios are worth the extra as they save you a tidy packet in the heating and cooling of the room every year. Constant temperatures are easier to maintain in a building that has been thoroughly tested and certified by a building regulation body like the BBA, the British Board of Agrment.
Space. Think about your equipment and furnishings will everything fit and still leave enough room for work? You don't want to have to trudge up and down the garden with your 7 ft easel every time you're ready to paint it needs space to sit in situ, waiting for you. Do you want a full workbench with drawers or sculpting equipment accommodated? If you are going to work from life there must be space in your new studio to set up a scene.
Tax. As a working artist in Ireland, you will be aware of the tax breaks available. In the UK, there is less incentive but you may be able to write off the cost of your studio against your tax return. Best to ask your accountant as there is a way to manage this and negate the need for renting studio premises under the plant and machinery allowance. So you can actually have a new studio space without having to pay for it yourself in the long run.
With placement, seclusion, comfort, space and tax considered, all that's left is to visualize your garden studio in situ. The creative potential of a bespoke new room of your own will propel your work into a whole new sphere.
