The Art of Growing Grape Vines
I have been researching how to grow grapes for several months now online. I have plans to start my own vineyard before long so it has been of great interest to me. I have a good friend who had his own vineyard back in Virginia some time ago. I remember him coming up from his cool basement with his own homemade bottle of wine to go with dinner. He was clearly delighted to be drinking his own wine. But I also heard many stories over wine and dinner of his grape growing challenges. These included pests and disease, hail storms, minimal grape production and bears showing up to eat the grapes. I thought this idea of having my own vineyard would be much too challenging, but he shared a lot with me, and encouraged me to embrace the idea.
I learned from this vintner friend that the most important ingredient to the success of a vineyard was its location. In Virginia, for example, planting grapes on the sides ofsouth or southwest facing hills was preferred to planting down in the valleys as this location could often provide better protection from unexpected frosts. Every location will have a more preferable spot, and it is good to learn from those who are already having success with their vineyard.
Grapes love lots of sunshine, and warm, dry summers with mild winters. Grapevines need a period of winter dormancy, but locations with long, cold, severe winters may well cause them to die. They need a long enough growing season for the grapes to mature. I know from living in Virginia that humid conditions can be a cause of disease. Good locations for grape planting is away from trees as grapes prefer full sunlight, and you want to avoid shade. You also do not want any ground area that is prone to continuous moisture or standing water as the roots of grapevines need drainage.
Once you have a desired location, you need to decide on what grape varieties you want to grow. Red and white wines are produced by different types of grapes, and many wines are made from a blend of different grapes. If you are wanting to make good wine, then you want to choose high quality grapes. It is said that a good tasting wine is determined by the quality of the grapes. Check with any local vineyards first to find out what grapes are giving them the most success.
Grape planting needs to be done in rows about eight feet wide, and plant the vines about six feet apart. You will need to supply a trellis for the grapevines to grow on. In the first year, the strongest shoot can be tied with string to the trellis. Avoid using wire for this as it can damage the shoots. You will need to study how to prune the shoots so that the strongest shoots will become the arms of the vine where the grapes will grow.
If you are growing wine grapes for the purpose of making wine, that will require separate study and know how. I have heard some vintner's say that growing the grapes was the easy part, and making the wine was the challenge.Learning how to grow grapes, and the process of growing grapes, can take years in order to make wine. But with the right information, guidance and effort the experience can prove to be quite simple and well worth the reward in the end. Growing wine grapes may come with some challenges, but it is precisely that which only makes the reward that much sweeter.
If you plant your grapes correctly, they will grow fast and flourish. If you pick quality grapes to plant, they will produce the best tasting wine. Pretty soon, you will be sipping your own wine as you watch the sun go down over your own beautiful vineyard.
