Setting Up The Humidor
Among all of the many significant cigar accessories available to the millions of
enthusiasts around the world, one of the most important is the humidor. Although these beautifully crafted boxes are considered an ideal method of storage, they must be setup properly in order to obtain the best results. Setting them up involves more than picking the right location in the home or office, and requires the purchase of additional items.
For example, a humidor cannot function properly without a humidity gauge, which is also called the hygrometer. The hygrometer is going to tell the current level of moisture in the air contained inside of the box. Cigars do best when they are kept at a 70-75% level of humidity, and at an ambient temperature around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Any wide variations in these conditions can affect both the tobacco in the cigars and the soft cedar wood inside of the humidor.
For example, let's say that you are trying to age a full box of cigars. You will have already taken the time to ensure that the container is large enough to allow proper circulation around all of the cigars. You will also have "seasoned" this box to ensure that it is at a level of at least 70% humidity before adding any cigars to it, and you will have ensured that the hygrometer you will use is functioning and calibrated properly. You will then add the humidifier to the proper location to help maintain optimal conditions.
Many humidifiers have a small metallic plate at their base that must bond with the wood inside of the box to ensure permanent stability. If you fail to create this bond, usually by holding the device in place for a few minutes until the glue has set, the humidity of the wood and the surrounding air might cause the glue to eventually fail. To remedy this, the owner must then seek out another non-odor emitting glue and repeat the original installation process.
The solution to this problem requires the use of a safe and entirely odor free glue. Remember that you cannot have the humidifier lying on top of the cigars, nor can you get accurate readings unless all devices are properly installed. Should your equipment fail to stick in place, you must simply find an odor free glue to position it properly.
