Seven Keys to Success in Lawn Maintenance
Seven Keys to Success in Lawn Maintenance
There are several things you can do, increase your chances for success in lawn maintenance. It is, in most cases, on account of how well different people do these things that we end up with the remarkable differences we see in lawn appearances. There are people whose lawns look thick, dense, lush everything one would yearn for in terms of lawn care. Then there are people whose lawns look sparse, yellowing, unhealthy a lawn owner's nightmare. You naturally don't want to find yourself in the second category of lawn owners. And the only way you can avoid ending up in the second category of lawn owners would be by taking note of the five keys to success in lawn maintenance, and more importantly, actually putting them in practice.
Without further ado, the seven keys to success in lawn maintenance include:
1. Effective ground preparation: one of the worst lawn care blunders you can make is that of sowing grasses without first preparing the ground adequately. Ground preparation aims at many things. If you do it correctly, for instance, the roots of the grasses you eventually plant will have an easier time penetrating the soil, to get moisture and nutrients. Proper ground preparation may also go a long way towards ridding the soil of lawn disease causing organisms and weed seeds saving you a lot of trouble later on.
2. Proper lawn fertilization: this should, ideally, be preceded by analysis of the soil whose objective would be to establish which nutrients the soil needs to be supplied with through a fertilizer. Then the right type of fertilizer should be purchased, and applied in the right way and at the right time.
3. Proper grass species selection: this is tricky. But if you are to be successful in your lawn maintenance, you have no alternative but to select the right type of grass. Your choice here should be influenced by two factors. The first of those has something to do with your vision: the type of lawn turf you want to end up with. The second of those is something to do with climatic conditions: where you are only likely to be successful if you plant a grass species that is well suited to the local conditions.
4. Effective irrigation: this is only a consideration where the amount of rainfall is inadequate (or irregular) for proper growth of the grass. The idea is to give the grasses just enough water for them to be lush but not too much that the soil supporting them becomes water-logged.
5. Proper weed management: your lawn won't look well if it is overgrown with weeds. Your choice of a weed management program will go a long way towards determining how successful your lawn care venture turns out to be.
6. Proper pest control: both preventive and curative measures should be put in place, to ensure that lawn weeds don't find accommodation in your particular lawn. If you neglect pest control, there is every possibility of everything else you do in the name of lawn care turning out to be an exercise in futility.
7. Proper mowing: lawn mowing is termed as proper if it is done at the right height, and in the right frequency. If you don't mow your lawn, it will look unkempt. It will make the yard on which it is established look bad. And seeing that a lawn is meant to actually improve the yard's aesthetics, it will hence be better not to have a lawn at all!
