Depending on the amount of space and the taste of the homeowner, there are several different types of ponds, water gardens and pondless elements that can add an atmosphere of elegance to any property. These are just a few of the choices for pond kits. They can be installed by a professional or as a do-it-yourself project.

Waterfall

A pondless waterfall is a water feature for someone who wants the sights and sounds of water without the hazards associated with ponds and pools. Helpful for those with small children or youngsters who visit regularly, pondless waterfalls can be designed in a variety of shapes and sizes. Water rushes down a carefully designed cascade of rocks or steps. The water reservoir is hidden from sight and creates a mystical effect of water disappearing below the surface.

Water Garden Pond

A water garden pond is a man-made structure than can be designed to look as if it were developed by Mother Nature. It enhances a landscaped garden. These ponds usually have a few different levels of ledges, boulders or rocks and may contain a waterfall. Gravel is customary. Plants and floating vegetation give small fish places to hide and food to eat.

Koi Ponds

Koi are large Japanese fish that are brightly painted in bold colors. They can be purchased as small as a few inches long and grow to several feet long. They resemble giant goldfish. Since these fish are popular for competitions or as pets, the koi pond is specially designed for keeping koi, rather than enhancing the landscape. These water structures have smooth surfaces and little or no vegetation. Gravel is discouraged, as rough surfaces can cause scarring on these fish. A perimeter around the pond and deep water should help discourage predators from making a meal of these prize fish.

Rock Columns

Created from man-made materials, rock columns resemble a waterfall or a rock sculpture complete with cascading water. Although they look like natural rock formations, rock columns can be made from nylon fiber, concrete and steel. An acid wash on the outside gives them a natural coloring, while interior piping delivers water to and from the reservoir.
