Shade Fabric For Exterior Sun Shades

In the early 20th century before the invention of synthetic fiber

, the majority of awning material for patio shades was derived from canvas. Canvas is a fairly basic fabric consisting of tightly woven cotton fibers that afford it great strength. Its great strength means that it is used in many situations requiring a robust fabric like for boat sails and industrial sacks.

In the latter half of the 20th century, synthetics from shade companies like Texilene and Coolaroo have started to replace canvas as the main fabric in patio shades by serving more helpful functionality. These functionalities are given below.

One of the topmost-sought qualities is that the fabric should be of a material that is resistant to ultraviolet (UV) degradation. Most normal organic fiber like canvas will break down over time as energetic UV rays destroy fragile organic chemical bonds that do not exist in synthetics. The second sought quality is a denser weave that is possible with synthetics that not only improves the light blocking properties, but also reduces UV damage to skin.

Ease of cleaning is another quality that is desired by consumers who have gone through several rounds of patio shades and awning material. In particular, modern synthetics do not get so easily infested by microbial growth as do canvas patio shades.

Awning material is of course used in both commercial and private residential awnings. Most people have rested beneath such patio shades positioned over the entrance or display glass of an establishment and attracting in profitable customers who may have been only seeking shelter. The low end awnings come with retraction mechanism in a hand-powered configuration, activated by a lever or lateral-arm set-up. Pricier awnings come with electrically powered retraction.

Such awning material is also used in for canopies. People like to have at least the roof of a canopy covered with fabric. The side-walls are optional, depending on whether the canopy owner is interested in privacy or more aeration in the canopy. Supposing one installs side-wall fabric to the structure, small cut-out window portholes and entrances will resolve concerns with stuffiness under the canopy.

Pergolas are one of the few that do not use fabric material. Four or more wooden columns are inserted into the ground which holds a number of top slats. These overhead slats shade against some of the light. Smaller versions of pergolas also exist. They are recognizable by the term arbors, and are easier to put together but cannot shade many people. Rather, they are guides for foot trails.
