Sharman Joshi was born on 17th March 1979 to Gujarati theater actor Arvind Joshi

. Sharman entire family was active in theater. After working in plays from his childhood, Sharman stepped into Bollywood to try his luck. After working in many Gujarati plays, Sharman debuted in Bollywood in 1999 film GODMOTHER (1999).

The film was directed by Vinay Shukla. It also starred Shabana Azmi (in the title role), Milind Gunaji, Nirmal Pandey and Raima Sen. Sharman played the supporting character of Karsan which had negative shades to it. GODMOTHER (1999) did moderate business at Box Office but was applauded by critics.

Shabana Azmi also won a National Award for Best Actress for this film. After Godmother (1999), sharman next film was lajja (2001) directed by rajkumar santoshi.

The film revolved around plight of women in villages of india. The film starred many of bollywood big names including rekha, manisha koirala, madhuri dixit, mahima chaudhary, jackie shroff, anil kapoor and ajay devgn. Sharman played a character of son of ramdulari, played by rekha.

Lajja (2001) was moderately successful at the box office and was critically acclaimed, too. In 2009, Sharman starred in rajkumar hirani record breaking blockbuster 3 idiots (2009).

Loosely based on chetan bhagat 5 point someone, 3 idiots (2009) portrays the story of 3 friends in engineering college and the toils of their life. The movie also starred aamir khan, r. Madhvan, kareena kapoor and boman irani. The movie touched many issues in a student lives including burden of expectations, rat race of scores, pressure and suicides.

The movie roughly grossed rs. 4 billion and broke all the records at box office. Sharman received filmfare best supporting actor award and iifa best supporting actor award for his performance in 3 idiots (2009). Toh baat pakki (2010) was sharman first film as a lead actor.

It was the directorial debut of kedar shinde in bollywood and starred tabu, vatsal seth, yuvika chaudhary and ayub khan. As kedar didnt know any other actors in the movie except sharman, he helped kedar to work with other actors. The movie received many positive reviews from the critics and performed moderately at the box office.

Sharman next film, allah ke banday is slated to release on 22nd october 2010. The movie makes a bold comment on the issue of children who get pulled in the world of crime and drugs. Allah ke banday also stars veteran actor naseeruddin shah and farukh kabir, who also has directed the film.

Sharman father, Arvind joshi is one of the eminent theater actors in gujarat. Sharman sister, mansi joshi, is a television actor. Sharman is married to prerna chopra, daughter of bollywood actor prem chopra. The couple has a daughter khyana (born 2005) and twin sons rehan and varryan (born 2009).
