Shedding Light On Weapons And Illumination Devices
Illumination devices help the user with vision and accuracy
. From hand-held flashlights to weapon mounted lights, they improve conditions for tactical and search and rescue operations, as well as hunting and everyday use. While the use of a light sounds simple and mundane, its presence or absence can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.
Tactical
Tactical lights improve aim of weapons on long-distance targets or in poorly lit areas. Available in a variety of sizes and bulb strengths, they can be hand-held or mounted on a weapon. A tactical flashlight can be used by holding the light in one hand and a weapon in the other. Using various positions, the light can be used to improve target aim or as a decoy to create a diversion. Weapon mounts are more common with longer guns that require two hands to use skillfully, like rifles, shotguns or submachine guns. Beam sizes vary.
LED
Flashlights that use a light-emitting diode (LED) consume less energy and usually last longer than other kinds. Once available only as a red light, LEDs are now a reliable source of brightness across the ultraviolet and visible spectrums as well. They are good light sources to use in the dark outdoors to prevent disturbing wildlife while still illuminating the area. Whether used as tactical LED flashlights or for law enforcement duty, they are required by most military branches and law enforcement agencies.
Flashlight
Weapons aside, a strong flashlight can provide safety in dark places, whether indoors or out. Filters can be mounted on some flashlights to provide specialized lighting for night ops. Whether used to illuminate the woods while hunting or finding victims in search and rescue, they should be sturdy, waterproof and long-lasting. The best type to use is one with batteries and bulbs that can be replaced or recharged quickly and easily when they die out.
Most law enforcement agencies and military branches require members to have several different models, depending on the types of operations and environments. Weight, durability, brightness and size play a major role in how they are used and why they are needed.
Sticks
Light sticks have a long shelf life and can be used in a variety of weather conditions. They are ideal for emergency situations, for search and rescue, tactical operations and come in a variety of colors. Some models are even available in infrared for special use. Some models have a hook on one end that latches on to clothing or equipment. Other features may include being waterproof and able to float.
