Shimla, formerly known as Simla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh in North India

. It is located at an altitude of approximately 2450 meters above sea level and enjoys a cool climate throughout the year. Tourists come to this pine clad hilly town to feast their eyes on the green pastures and snow-capped peaks. This beautiful hill station has a unique blend of Victorian styled buildings dating from the colonial era, along with local Indian temples and palaces. There are also many well-recognized colleges and research institutions in Shimla.

Located near the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas in northwest India, Chandigarh is the capital city of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and a Union Territory as well. Indias first planned city, Chandigarh is a clean, green and prosperous city of the country. Nature preservation can be seen co existing with modernization and urbanization. Chandigarh homes several well maintained gardens, quiet lakes, well preserved museums and lively markets. There are also many prestigious boarding schools and educational institutions.

There is no direct train from Shimla to Chandigarh. Shimla is connected to Kalka, the nearest railhead to Chandigarh by meter gauge on a mountainous route. One can take The Shimla-Kalka railway - a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge train to reach Kalka and change their train from Kalka. This train journey though slow, is quite beautiful with its breathtaking views of the hills and surrounding villages.

Shimla is located at a distance of 115 km from Chandigarh. State owned as well as private buses are available from Shimla to Chandigarh at a gap of half an hour with the option of deluxe buses or ordinary buses. Hiring a cab is an easier option if travelling with family and kids or while in a group. The approximate cost of cab per kilometre depends upon the type of car. It may take around 2 hours and 20 minutes to reach Chandigarh depending on the road and traffic conditions. One can also drive along to Chandigarh in own vehicle but enough sleep and good experience of driving in hilly regions are a must for the journey. The major towns in between are Kandaghat, Dharampur, Kalka and Panchkula before reaching Chandigarh. There are several petrol pumps, dhabas, and hotels on the way, from Shimla to Chandigarh.


Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti is 23 kilometres from the city and is connected to Chandigarh with limited flights. Chandigarh International Airport or Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport is 15 kilometres from the main city of Chandigarh. It is better to check the flight options from Shimla to Chandigarh thoroughly as very few airlines operate flights in this route.
