Shin Eun-Bin excited by Champions League clash
When you talk to Shin Eun-BIn about Tottenham Hotspur his eyes light up like a child at Christmas, you almost expect him to run around the room he seems so happy. His love of Spurs runs deep, though, ever since a fortunate visit to White Hart Lane.
"I was meant to be in London as part of an athletics meet, I was a pretty good at the javelin in my younger days, but on the run up to my first throw on the Friday I felt something tear in my left leg.Turned out my hamstring had gone and that was the event over for me. The coach told me I had to stay in the hotel for the weekend but...," he stops and laughs out loud, "I ended up with some bad influences."
The bad influence was Scottish athlete Davey Brown. "He was behind me in the breakfast queue on the Saturday morning and asked if I was done for the competition. When I told him I was he asked if I fancied going to watch his team, Portsmouth, play Spurs at White Hart Lane. He wouldn't let me say no!"
Waiting for his coach to leave, Shin and Brown, headed to the ground. It was his first experience at a game outside of Korea and one that made his jaw drop. "I was stunned," he says, "the noise, the number of people, the fact that everyone seemed to be wearing uniforms. It was completely different to home. I was hooked and it's been Spurs, Spurs, Spurs ever since."
His teammates, he laughs, "just want me to stop talking about them. They're all Man Utd fans because of Park Ji-Sung but I will never change."
As for tonight, what does he think? "It's the biggest game in Spurs' history for years. Literally massive. If we play to our ability then I think we stand a great chance. Why not? If we can beat AC Milan why not Real Madrid?"
And the result? "A draw would be an excellent result. I would bite your hand off right now for 1-1. A vital away goal"
With that thought in his head another smile plays across his face. But would he swap his own club success with Seoul United for a Champions League win for Spurs. "Oh, don't ask me that," he laughs, "the gaffer might be reading!"
