This is helpful in that should an emergency occur then he would be able to formulate a plan of action in the shortest time possible bearing in mind the number, type and caliber of men on board.

Other captain duties involve steering the ship and determining the speed at which it is driven at, choosing the most appropriate route to a given destination, representing the ship's crew members when they meet with other captains and crews and communicating with harbor officials and requesting for permission to dock the ship.

As is evident, the captain's responsibilities are indeed numerous and burdensome. While numerous captains in the previous years have managed to carry out these responsibilities through their own devised systems, captains in the twenty first century need not struggle as much just to fulfill their job responsibilities. With the right tools they can be able to obtain relief, albeit partial, from the heavy workload that is characteristic of being captain.

Assuming that every member on board has an electronic device that can connect to a network that is only accessible on the ship then the captain will be able to receive periodic updates from his crew members without having to move around consistently.

Another way that these systems can aid captains is by enabling them to maintain their schedules with ease. This is especially important before the ship sets sail. Captains who scheduled to head a certain crew on board but cannot make it can simply communicate with other ship officials and request for a replacement. It should also be noted that messages sent in this manner are much harder to intercept and as such these systems can also be used to relay top secret and confidential information about sailing assignments from one captain to another.
