Shooting is one of the skills that every great player ever to take the ice shares

. Quite simply, to put the puck in the net, you need to shoot it, and the better you can shoot it, the more you're going to score. Yet many players don't specifically focus on improving their shot and just go about their careers without ever seriously thinking about how to improve their shot. If you're one of them, here are 3 simple ways you can improve your shot.

Let the stick do some of the work...

One of the key ways to improve your shot speed and accuracy is to realize that you want to be making the stick do a lot of the work. Especially with composite sticks, the structure of the stick means that when you're shooting, the stick will naturally flex, and when you release the shot, whip forward adding speed and power to your shot. Guys like Brett Hull were masters of letting their stick do the work. Focus on mastering this and your shot will improve.

Make sure your stick is the right size...

A lot of players tend to use sticks that are far too long for them and this in turn hurts their ability to shoot accurately and with power. A common misconception is that a long stick will result in faster shots due to greater speed at the blade when shooting, but in reality, a stick that is too long will do nothing but hinder your shot. You're better off erring on the short side than the long side and a shorter stick also has added benefits like greater puck control.
