My husband recently wanted to know why cats eat grass. So I did a little reach and discovered that no one really has a clear answer to this question. However, it seems that all cats, including our cuddly house cats have the instinctive desire to nibble on grass.

It appears that wild cats eat grass to help their digestive process. After eating small animals, grass helps them to vomit undigested parts of those animals. By regurgitating, these cats reduce the risk of blockage in their digestive tract. Of course, since indoor cats rarely have the opportunity to eat other animals, nibbling on grass helps them throw up their own fur instead of animal parts. If other cats are anything like mine (professional little groomers) by eating grass and throwing up, they are helping to prevent hairballs from causing their digestive system to be blocked.

I highly recommend that cat parents purchase or grow cat grass. I understand that while cleaning up cat vomit is quite unpleasant; it is a much better option than having to rush your cat to the vet because his digestive system is blocked by hairballs. Not only are these visits to the vet costly, they are stressful for both humans and cats. Also, since surgery is sometimes necessary to remove the obstruction, cat hairballs can be life threatening.

Let your cat enjoy that grass. However, if the cat goes out, do not let him munch on the grass if you use pesticides or other lawn chemicals.
