Should I Be Learning Guitar Scales?
One of the questions that most beginning guitar players ask is if they should even bother learning guitar scales. After all, so much of modern guitar is chord based, and unless you are the soloist, do you even need to spend time learning and practicing all of those boring scales?
Well those boring scales are the foundation of all electric guitar work, and if you don't know them, you will be at a huge disadvantage if not now, then someday down the road. You don't want to be known as the guitarist who can only play "rhythm guitar", standing in the background. If you really want to rock, then you need to be learning guitar scales.
The point of learning guitar scales is actually lost on many guitarists. They see them as a structure to be worked within, but really scales give them a freedom to go anywhere on the fret board, and know that they will always be in key, and sound right to the ear. If you don't have full knowledge of the scales, then you will be apt to hit a bad note more often than not.
Also, knowing the scales is a way of making yourself more fluid and quick on the fret board. You will find that the more you practice them, the more your guitar technique will improve, to the point where you don't even think of them as scales any more. They will become a part of you, and a part of your solo style, that will give you the confidence to play with anyone, any time, and in any key.
