Should I Buy An Led Tv Or An Lcd Tv?
With the big companies citing LED TV benefits like better picture quality and less
power consumption in a more eco-friendly package, it's no wonder than LED televisions have caused quite a stir in the television market. But what are LED displays and how are they different from an LCD's?
There's plenty of LED screens out there, but very few are actually true LED televisions - most are in fact an LCD panel with an LED backlight and could set you back almost double the cost of an LCD and triple that of a plasma.
LED backlights came about to address the limitations of the florescent tubes used to provide light on LCD displays. As the florescent tubes are always left on, some light would leak through and prevent blacks being as deep as they could be which in turn would impact the sharpness. The tubes also had a limited range of colours that they could show, so saturation of colours was limited.
An LED TV uses light emitting diode's to illuminate the display by mounting tiny lights in rows either behind the display or around the edge of the display (known as 'edge-lit' displays).
Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Edge-lit versions tend to be very thin, as the LED's are mounted on the side of the display. They also have fewer LED's in total, so tend to be less expensive.
Backlit displays on the other hand can create deeper blacks by using 'local dimming', shutting off bulbs in dark areas of the image and preventing unwanted light shining through. Of course, these additional lights come at a price as backlit LED's tend to be more expensive.
But while backlit may sound like the better of the two, there are technicalities. Backlit tv's have many more diodes which would be too expensive to shut each off individually, so are shut off in larger groups. This means that in areas where light pixels meet dark ones, the light areas of can show darker than desired and the dark areas lighter.
The alternative is a true LED screen that lights every diode separately, which would be very expensive and is only really seen as large billboards owned by major companies placed in high traffic areas.
The advantages of an LED screen are clear though. They tend to use less power than their counterparts and don't use mercury, which is great news for the environment. They also tend to be better balanced in terms of colour contrast and colour depth, making images more vivid and much sharper.
Of course the final decision is up to you and no big purchase should be rushed. Have a shop around and visit your local retailer before you buy. Take some time to watch the screens and when you've found one that meets your requirements, buy it, set it up and home and show it off to your friends.
