Should I Recruit Graduate Students?
A lot of people may be uncertain whether or not they should recruit graduate students
to fill the positions they have open in their companies or if they should wait until the right person wanders in off of the street to put in an application. The people who wrestle with this decision are uncertain as to whether or not they are breaking some moral code by trying to hire the students before they graduate and are snatched up by another company offering hirer wages.
To recruit graduate students is neither illegal, nor immoral. The action is also not uncommon. You see the recruitment of sports stars to colleges and professional teams all of the time. The sporting world calls it a draft pick. They send recruiters to all of the games of all of the different schools to watch for the players they think are the most promising young athletes. Once they have selected who they will want to draft they start to make offers to the person to get them to agree to play for their school or team and no other.
To recruit graduate students to fill open positions you have in your company means that you are studying the up and coming people of the field looking for the best of the best. You will watch the students for their grade point averages, their involvement, and their experience. When you see one that looks promising you will offer them a position upon the completion of their studies.
In order to recruit graduate students who are at the very top of their fields you will need to have a competitive package to offer them. Remember that many other corporations are looking at the same pool of scholars that you are watching and they will be making offers to many of the same young people that you do. So the packages you offer have to measure up to the ones the other people will offer.
These hiring packages should include the following:
A signing bonus for agreeing to sign a contract tying the scholar to your company for a period of time
An annual salary that is competitive in todays market place and that has the details of raises and bonuses laid out clearly for the individual
A health benefits package explaining what all is covered by your health insurance
Vacation packages that explain when the individual will become eligible for vacations and how long the period of time will be
Sick days and paid leaves or holidays need to be explained in great detail
Perks like company cars or travel need to be explained in writing so there is no confusion
You actually have to have an employment company to be able to do this recruiting and scouting for you. It takes a lot of time to scout out the possible scholars that will make you the employee you want. An employment agency that does this on a regular basis can save you a lot of time and man hours.
To
recruit graduate students the company should scout out all of the colleges that have programs in their departments. They can also hire companies like Grad Central to
recruit graduate students for them.
