Should You Be Getting a Divorce?
The phrase "'til death do us part" in a marriage is not as true as it should be, granted that the divorce rate has increased throughout the years. Although divorce is highly frowned upon by society because it destroys the sanctity of marriage, some divorced couples actually have a good reason why they got divorced from their spouses. Below are some the most common reasons why a couple divorces, which will also give you an idea whether or not you should be getting a divorce.
Infidelity - Considered as one of the top reasons why couples are getting a divorce, adultery occurs in half of all marriages in the US. In a marriage, commitment to his or her spouse is necessary in order to make their relationship survive. Adultery will most likely destroy everything you have built since you have been together, in particular the trust towards your partner, which in turn will make it difficult for you to forgive him or her. Some of the reasons that explain infidelity in a marriage are the boredom and the lack of sexual activity between spouses, anger, and unfulfilled desires.
Abuse - Abuse occurs in different types, such as physical, emotional, and mental. Unlike infidelity, in which couples could still find a solution to the problem, there is no getting around abusive spouses, who may be suffering from psychological or mental disorder which further explains their actions. The abusive spouses may get admitted to a shrink and get rehabilitated, but chances are that they would decline the offer and say that everything is alright.
Cultural and Religious Differences - Marriages between people from different backgrounds and cultures have become prevalent nowadays, but this does not prelude to a marital bliss. Intercultural marriages experience lots of problems and difficulties because they have a contrasting set of beliefs and routines which crop up after their marriage. People with an open mind and take time to understand the culture of their spouse will always have a shot for a long-lasting marriage, but not everybody are as accepting and apprehensive, which is why marriage under this category fails.
Addiction - Spouses suffering under substance abuse is a serious problem because they are enslaved by their addiction. As a result, they become changed people and are not acting like their normal selves. The abuse is not limited to the use of designer drugs; spouses can become addicted to gambling, alcohol, video games, and hobbies that take a lot of time. Getting rid of addiction is possible but a tall order. However, it must be done before the addiction becomes a part of the spouse's lifestyle.
Financial Issues - Poor management of finances involves maxing out credit cards and not paying the bills on time, wasting money on desires and not on needs, hiding money from one's spouse, and others. Financial issues rob married couples of an opportunity to provide for their families and become prepared for any unforeseeable problems they might encounter in the future such as sicknesses and job losses.
Communication problems - The classic case of misunderstanding still stands as one of the most common reason for divorce. Communication is imperative in order to make a marriage work so once a couple fails to effectively talk with each other, there is a great chance that a divorce will soon follow. A marriage counselor can help alleviate the problem and open up a line for communication, but opening up is just half of the problem. Mis-communication stems from a host of complicated issues that accumulated in the past, but for a marriage with this type of problem, finding a way to communicate is the first step.
