You may have seen shower head water filters recommended on a popular daytime TV show

They are being recommended because of the chlorine or chloramines and other chemicals that are in publicly treated water supplies. These chemicals may be particularly hazardous to children, although they can cause skin problems and other issues for everyone.

The latest recommendations come as a result of new scientific studies concerning exposure to cancer causing chemicals called THMs. Dozens of chemicals are included in the group called trihalomethanes or THMs. One that you might be familiar with is chloroform gas.

These chemicals form in a complex reaction that occurs when bacteria, algae and other aquatic life are killed by disinfectants. Research indicates that the type of disinfecting process used doesn't matter. All of them cause the release of THMs. Most of the shower head water filters on the market are ineffective at reducing the water's THM content.

Years ago when scientists first began to evaluate the risk of THM exposure, it was thought that consumption through drinking was the only problem. The studies began because doctors had noticed an increased incidence of bladder cancer among people serviced by public treatment facilities.

The newest scientific studies have shown that more of the carcinogens are present in the bloodstream after showering than after consuming a liter of unfiltered tap-water! As chemicals move through the digestive system, their concentration is diluted. When they are inhaled or pass through the skin, they are less likely to be diluted.

The question arises, does that make shower head water filters more important than those for the drinking faucet? No.

Consumption of chlorine or chloramines increases a child's risk of anemia. The toxic chemicals can cause digestive difficulties as they kill beneficial bacteria naturally present in the colon and digestive tract.

The chemicals likely become lodged in the tissues of the bladder, which may explain the increased incidence of that type of cancer. It is very important to filter what you drink. We need to keep in mind that shower head water filters are important too.
