India, a fast developing country has a wealth of diverse experiences to offer its visitors. For the discerning traveler its coastal cities can offer a welcoming respite from the popular tourist haunts. The city of Mangalore is one such coastal city. Named after the goddess Mangaladevi, the city is bordered by the Arabian Sea. The area boasts prosperity with waterfalls, green fields, tropical beaches and a diversity of wildlife. Mangalore is also a great destination for witnessing elaborately carved ancient Hindu temples

The ancient temple, Shri Sharavu Magaganapathi, has been standing for more than 800 years. Only walking distance from Hampankatta it can also be accessed on auto rickhaws. It is best to visit the temple when a religious event is being held. In fact, the temple has a busy calendar with many events taking place all year.

The main entrance arch of the temple is just a preview to the grandeur within; the outside is indigo blue alternating with white while pink-hued goddesses flank the carved exterior. One of the statuettes found in the temple is that of the main deity. There are many other shrines dedicated to gods and goddesses like Kadri, Sharavu, Kudroli and Mangaladevi. The 800-year old shrine of Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara in the Sri Mahaganapathi Kshetra, seenin the everyday nithya silver kavacha (mask) is, by far, the best of all the shrines. When night comes, the temple transforms into a monolithic brazen palace with million of incandescent bulbs enhancing the beautiful arches and domes of the Hindu temple

A popular attraction: theRathothsavaandDeepothsavaor 'Festival of Lights' has become reverential yet joyous celebrations.
