Shutter Island may not go down as one of the best films of Scorsese, but wearing Alfred Hitchcock on the sleeves and cynicism and painful journey into madness.
Shutter Island, the forth film to team Leonardo DiCaprio with legendary director Martin Scorsese, hit theaters today. This is the first of my "10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2010? to be released so, obviously, I headed out to the theater to see it. And, I must say, it earned its spot on that list. I will warn you, though, that this film may not be for everybody. It's a psychological thriller, so it will definitely twist your mind while watching.
When watching the movie, you need to keep in mind that it's a psychological thriller. The above paragraph is a restatement of the official movie summary, but only because I'm trying to avoid giving away the twist. There are flashes of foreshadowing throughout the movie, and it is, of course, extremely obvious if you've already read the book which inspired the movie. I haven't, but the friend who took me to see the movie has a copy of the book that she's lending me once she's finished rereading it herself.
All the little touches in the movie make the movie perfect as much as the plot does the ash lingering on Teddy as a woman burns from the inside out in his arms (see the trailer; it's brief, but there), the shadows and shower scenes, the handcuffs on each patient, and the explanation of the twist at the end of the movie.
The film tells the tale of one Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshal who is enlisted to help find a missing criminal on Shutter Island the home to 66 of the country's most dangerous psychotic criminals. Right from the outset, nothing feels right, and Teddy Daniels must put the pieces together before all the mystery, red herrings, and barely contained hints of the film ruin the experience for the viewer. Shutter Island does a solid job, but it easily straddles the line between complex puzzler and almost being too forward with its hints. In the end, Shutter Island is another "twist" movie; a played out gimmick that never fails to lure in the movie fans who think they've got it all figured out then they love to tell you when the movie is over that everything that happened in the movie is exactly what they thought would happen in the movie. Bastards. You'd think just once these cinematic Nostradamus' would write down these film-fueled premonitions, but they never do it. That's because they're liars just like that girl who told you, "Don't worry. Those bumps are just razor burn."
Other than that, Shutter Island was a very good film. It kept me interested from beginning to end and provided a very unexpected ending. As far as psychological thrillers go, it was one of the best I've seen in a while. If you're a fan of such films, definitely go see this one. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
