Siblings And Strollers
Choosing a stroller is fairly easy if you have only one kid who needs somewhere to
sit during a trip to Disney or anywhere else you visit on your Florida vacation. But what do you have to think about when the time comes for renting strollers for more than one child?
There can be a number of reasons why you have two children needing to ride in your rental stroller. You could have twins. You could have two children close in age. Or you could even have three children, two who really need to ride in a stroller all day and a third one who can walk most places but needs a bit of a rest now and then. How are you going to accommodate them all when you're deciding the best way to go about renting strollers?
Picking the right stroller with the right accessories is the key thing, of course. If you've only got two children, then the process is as easy as anything. All you need to do when renting strollers is to pick a double stroller. A sensibly built double stroller will make sure that both of your children, whether they're twins or whether they've got a couple of years between them, will be safe and comfortable.
You can find several types of double stroller. Some double strollers are like double-decker buses, with an upper compartment for one child and a lower compartment for the other. The real problem with this sort of stroller if you're renting strollers is that the child in the lower compartment won't be able to see what's going on as well, and this won't make for a happy vacation to be remembered, whether you visit the Walt Disney World Resort or any of the other attractions and theme parks in and around this part of Florida. It's much better to choose a stroller that has the two children side by side so both can see the world around them - and they can see each other and chatter (or squabble, but that's another story).
When you choose your double stroller to rent for your vacation, it's wise to pick one that has two separate hoods so you can adjust the shade and the sun to suit the needs of the two individuals in the stroller. A single hood that goes over both doesn't really work too well if you are visiting an attraction that has something to see overhead and one child is asleep (and needs the hood to protect them from the sun) while the other is awake and wanting to see what's up. So separate hoods are definitely the way to go. And it's good to make sure that the hoods - both of them - have a viewing window so you can see who is awake and who is asleep while you're pushing - or who's trying to pull little brother's shoes and socks off to while away the time in a long, boring queue.
Also keep luggage in mind when choosing a double stroller. You don't want to haul the masses of gear needed for a day out with two children around on your back, so look out for a model of stroller that has space for plenty of luggage. One real advantage of a side-by-side double stroller as opposed to the double-decker type is that the side-by-side version has plenty of luggage space underneath. The double-decker type of double stroller has a child underneath rather than luggage, so guess where all that luggage has to go! A well-designed double stroller will still be able to fit through an ordinary door without any need for gymnastics and weightlifting combined.
But what are your options if you have one child who needs to ride in a stroller all day while your older child can, should and wants to get out and walk for some of the day? While any two children up to 100 pounds combined weight can ride in a good double stroller, this may not be your best option with a wriggly preschooler who wants to get out and move. A bit of movement is healthy and you probably want your child to burn off some energy while you're out and about rather than having him or her whizz about the place at the end of the day when you're puffed out from having pushed both kids around all day. Again, the solution is pretty simple. When you set about the process of renting strollers, book a single stroller with a glide board.
A glide board is a wonderful invention that gives an older sibling a place to stand when they want to rest their legs for a bit. If you were the big brother or sister, remember how your younger sibling rode in the pram or the supermarket trolley while you walked alongside. When you got tired, you tried various balancing acts with your feet on the axles of the pram or the trolley, which gave you the break you needed but threw the balance out like anything for your mum or dad, meaning that they would often growl at you to get off. A glide board is an accessory for a baby stroller that attaches to the stroller sensibly in the middle so it won't affect the steering and gives a sibling a safe place to stand. It's particularly handy when you're crossing a busy road, as you don't have to try to hold hands with the older child and push the stroller at the same time with the other hand - a difficult feat if you've only got a small gap in the traffic to negotiate. If you insist that the older child uses the glide board accessory on the stroller when you cross the road, he or she will stay safe throughout the manoeuvre.
