Allegra is a medication that is prescribed to people who want to treat seasonal allergy

symptoms such as itchy and runny nose, red and watery eyes and hay fever. It is an antihistamine and does not cause drowsiness.

It works by blocking one type of receptor for histamine and helps in stopping the growth and spread of H1 receptor-containing cells. These cells are attached to histamine and that is why they get activated during certain conditions. On getting attached, an effect similar to an allergy is produced, which can be controlled and stopped by the use of Allegra. This drug is similar in function to other second generation drugs such as loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and azelastine (Astelin).

You should take this medication with a glass full of water. Swallow it whole, without chewing or crushing. Ensure that you do not miss your dose and take this medication as prescribed, but, if at all you miss a dose, do not overdose to cover up. Start from the next dose and continue taking it. Store it at room temperature and protect it from moisture.

What are the side effects of Allegra?

You may experience certain side effects along with the desired effects. While some side effects are common, and others are rare, all of them cannot be anticipated. Only a doctor can determine if you can take Allegra safely or not. This is why you should never take it yourself. Always consult a doctor before you take this drug. You may experience side effects such as fatigue, headache, coughing, menstrual problems, drowsiness and nausea. Some people who take this drug also experience back or ear pain.

Anti-acids such as Mylanta, Rolaids, Pepcid and Milk of Magnesia should not be taken with Allegra, as they reduce its effectiveness. Ensure that children and pets stay away from this medication. Women who are pregnant or who are about to get pregnant should ensure that they tell their doctor about their pregnancy before taking this medication. If you experience any side effects, stop taking the drug and call your doctor immediately.

What is the recommended dosage?

It should be taken only by adults and children who are over 12 years of age. Normally, a dose of 60 mg is prescribed for hay fever and it should be taken twice a day. The doctor might prescribe a dose of 180mg once per day also. If the individual is suffering from any type of kidney problems, a prescription of 60mg is given. Children in the age group of 6 to 11 years are prescribed a dose of 30 mg twice a day. Make sure that you complete the whole course as prescribed by the doctor.
