Sigmoidoscopy Examination For Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ibs - 2 Types To Consider

As you know, the diagnosis of IBS can be very difficult

. There is no single laboratory examination that can give a definite positive or negative result. In diagnosing for irritable bowel syndrome, a patient undergoes a battery of medical examinations to make sure that indeed a patient is suffering from the disease. One of the medical examinations that a patient goes through is a sigmoidoscopy.

Sigmoidoscopy is an internal examination of the large intestines. It is an invasive procedure wherein an instrument is inserted into the anus to let the doctor see the inner linings of the large bowel.

There are two types of sigmoidoscopy. One type of sigmoidoscopy is called flexible sigmoidoscopy. In flexible sigmoidoscopy, the doctor uses a flexible endoscope to insert into the anus. The other type of sigmoidoscopy is called rigid sigmoidoscopy wherein the doctor uses a rigid endoscope to do the procedure.

There are people who confuse sigmoidoscopy from colonoscopy and vice versa. Both procedures examine the large intestine but they differ in their scopes. Sigmoidoscopy is limited to examining the distal portion of the large intestine which is more or less 2 feet in length. Colonoscopy on the other hand has a wider scope which is 4 to 5 feet in length. Sigmoidoscopy is usually done as a pre-examination procedure before proceeding to colonoscopy.

There are several reasons why a doctor requests a patient to undergo sigmoidoscopy. One reason is that the doctor suspects that there is a problem in the lower part of the patient's bowel. This can be indicated by pain on the lower abdomen, pain around the anus, bleeding, or sudden changes in the patient's bowel habits.
