Signs Your Family Might Need Counseling

We are often unaware of how our behavior affects others

. It is easy to become so wrapped up in ourselves that we forget to consider alternate perspectives. Therapy provides a safe and calm environment for couples and families to discuss their feelings in a constructive way. A family and marriage counselor can guide you through the process of reconciling past issues as well as provide you with the necessary communication tools to work through new ones as they arise.

To determine whether your family might need counseling, ask yourself the following questions:

Do we fight more often than we have fun?

Do we communicate well with each other?

Are we respectful of each other's needs, even if they do not match our own?

Do we avoid spending time together?

Are there feelings of resentment, anger, or betrayal among us?

Addiction, low self-esteem, grief, repressed traumatic memories, guilt and depression are some of the common triggers of trouble in relationships. However, simple differences in personality can also be to blame.

There are many options when it comes to finding help for your family. Mental health providers go by several different names, each providing similar yet slightly different services.

A psychologist typically holds a Doctorate degree in Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) as well as additional certification in a specializations ranging from sexual addiction to personality disorders.

A psychiatrist is similar to a psychologist, but is a medical doctor (M.D. or O.D.) who has the ability to prescribe medications.

A family and marriage counselor usually holds a Masters or Doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or a related field, and specializes in helping families and couples heal relationships.

A religious counselor is a clergy member or other faith-based practitioner trained in the mental health field that can hold a wide range of degrees and/or levels of certification. Christian pre marriage counseling, family therapy, and prayer healing are common specialties.

Find someone you feel comfortable with whose qualifications suit your needs. No family, couple, or individual has to suffer alone; help is out there.
