Silica Sand and Its Uses in Various Industries

One of the most common types of sand available in the natural resources of the globe is silica sand. There are many suppliers of silica sand throughout this world who collect quartz crystals from the sand dunes, beaches etc., and process into different types and grades of silica sand which is used in various industries for making glass, creating moulds, castings etc.

Quartz crystal is the most common mineral on this earth and silica sand is made up of broken down quartz crystals. Another name of silica is silicon dioxide also termed as SiO2 which includes quartz as a specific latticed structure. Thus, silica sand is the form of quartz which has been broken down into tiny granules. Most of the time, these tiny granules are found in non-tropical regions of the world which are collected and processed into the silica sand of different grades and different sizes. The silica sand has different uses in various industries as briefed below:-

Silica Sand for Glass Manufacturing

The silica sand for glass manufacturing includes window glasses, mirrors, tableware, decorative glassware, car mirrors, TV monitor screens, fibreglass etc. The silica sand which is free from contaminants, low in iron, clear in color and consistent in grain size is used in glass manufacturing industries.

Silica Sand for Foundries

Due to silica sands property of resistance to high temperature, it is used in foundries also known as metal casting units. It is used to prepare castings which involve titanium, metal castings and steel. The casting surfaces are also cleaned using silica sand.

Silica Sand for Water Filtration

The silica sand consisting of hard and dense grains is used to design water filtration systems for wells, pools, water treatment plants etc.

Silica Sand for Golf Course

The silica sand is processed to provide ideal infiltration rates, aeration and porosity requirements for greens or tee construction and so it is highly used in world class golf courses, football, volleyball, horse racing track and other fields of play.

Silica Sand for Artificial Grass

As silica sand is extremely durable, it can be used in the areas where there is artificial grass for sports or other events is required.

There are other uses of silica sand also like it is mixed with clay to manufacture sanitary ware. Many adhesives also contain silica as an important constituent.
