Silicone sponge works well under UV light and is extremely stable over a broad temperature range, often considered for both high and low temperature gaskets and low temperature gaskets.
How is silicone rubber made?
Made from silicon dioxide, or silica, silicone can be found in nature, usually as quartz, or beach sand.
To make it, the silica is put into a furnace, where the oxygen is driven out of the oxygen, which, in turn, combines to make carbon dioxide resulting in silicon metal.
This is powdered and combined with methylene chloride and copper - in a Fluidized Bed Reactor. This mixes the fluid and suspends all solid ingredients.
The silicon reacts to the methylated chlorine reacts, which forms several different chemicals that have silicon atoms as a backbone.
These can be combined with each other with chemicals, metal or other additives to make silicones with various properties.
