Silicone

Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive gel. The gel filler holds together uniformly and looks and feels like natural breast tissue. As for the safety concerns, the FDA approved the use of silicone implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction in November 2006.

After reviewing years of research concerning silicone gel-filled breast implants, the Institute of Medicine concluded that the "evidence suggests that diseases, systemic complaints or conditions are no more common in women with breast implants than in women without implants."

Saline

Saline implants are filled with a salt water solution similar to the fluid that makes up most of the human body. These implants are filled to the desired size during surgery. The incision is slightly smaller for saline implants than for silicone implants because they are not pre-filled.
