The Germans thrashed the Socceroos 4-0 last night and have now won their first game at six FIFA World Cups in a row. Podolski, who opened the scoring early on with a fierce strike before further goals from Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller and Cacau, was voted man of the match.

"I think we were pretty good from the first to the last minute," said Podolski. "We had great attacks, got great goals and put our opponents under pressure. We implemented really well what we wanted to do and we were rewarded."

The Cologne forward was adamant the emphatic result will not change the team's attitude.

"I know the whole of Germany is celebrating this victory right now as they should. But we have to remain focused, keep on working and implement what the coach tells us to do. This is just the first game and there is still a long way to go," said Podolski.

Australia, who are competing in their third FIFA World Cup, were left stunned by the result in Durban, a second-half red card for influential midfielder Tim Cahill adding salt to their wounds.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill said: "We have to win our next two games. We are disappointed with our performance against Germany. Nothing worked for us and we struggled in every department. Germany are a great side and I they certainly proved it. But we simply have to bounce back from this result and get wins against Ghana and Serbia."

Germany take on Serbia on 18June while Australia face Ghana 24 hours later.
