No... it is not another boy band...neither is it a funky bandana. Silly Bandz are ... well like their name states... silly bands! OK OK just kidding. They are not THAT silly. Silly Bandz are the latest story of how something simple, if revamped appropriately to fit a target audience, soon becomes a fad that no one can live without. If someone told you two years ago that rubber bands shaped like animals would be extremely popular... you would think that they were rather ... err... silly. Well, lo and behold, this is exactly what Silly Bandz are rubber bands which kids all over the world seem to adore and want.

So, let us find out what the fuss about Silly Bandz is really about.

They are a brand of silicone rubber bands formed into shapes such as animals, objects and letters and are normally worn as bracelets by both girls and boys. The fun part about these colourful animal shaped rubber bands is they stretch around your wrist (or any object for that matter) and pop back into shape as soon as you take them off!

So who came up with this ingenious' idea?

The origins of Silly Bandz came from Japan (naturally!) in 2002, by a design team who wanted to introduce a more environmentally sustainable rubber band as an office product. Robert Croak, owner of Toledo, Ohio based BCP Imports, in the States, came across the band, and decided to reinvent them as a toy and market them as a kids fashion accessory. Croak saw potential in the bands by producing them in a greater variety with dozens of shapes, colours and themes he assumed that kids might want to collect and trade them just like baseball or Pokmon cards. And just as he envisioned... the kids love them and can't get enough of them.

But what is so special about rubber bands?

Silly Bandz come in all kind of colours - yellow, green, orange, pink, purple, light blue, dark blue, and red. Some glow in the dark and others are even scented. They come in shapes ranging from foods, monsters, camp collectibles, and miscellaneous objects. Animals are the most common type. Bands shaped like food, princesses, lions, tigers, bears and so on are the latest fashion must haves for teens and toddlers all across the world. There are ingenious themes that you can wear, share or collect. This way, you can pick and choose your personal favourites.
